Blogging can have immense value for a business nowadays. It allows you to share important and useful information with your customers, position yourself as an industry-leader with knowledgeable and thoughtful posts and, most importantly, strengthen your SEO efforts and improve your search engine rankings. All of these, especially the latter, can lead to more visits, more customers and, subsequently, more sales.
So how do you make sure you’re using your business blog to its full potential? Follow these quick tips to get started:
- 1. Find a keyword balance.
Typically, you will want to target one or two keywords within each post. (Google’s Keyword Tool can help with this.) You’ll need to integrate these terms seamlessly into the copy you create, and think long and hard about the placement of each one. You don’t want keywords to stick out like a sore thumb or make your content incomprehensible. This will only confuse the reader and turn them off to your site; neither of which are good for business.
You should also be mindful of keyword density. Too many keywords could have you flagged as spam and hurt your search engine rankings; too few could have no affect at all on SEO. Shoot for a density of between 1 and 3 percent for each keyword, or one per every hundred words, and that should do the trick.
- 2. Cross-promote within your site.
In each and every post you create, find an opportunity or two for internal linking. Direct users to another page on your site for more information, or refer them to a past blog post to expound on a topic. These not only encourage customers to explore and interact with your site (and possibly buy!), it also helps build up links for each of your pages and posts. The number of links a page has is a huge factor in search engine rankings.
Additionally, be diligent in optimizing any internal link you create. Work your keywords into the anchor text and title of each and every link. Optimizing these areas can greatly enhance your SEO efforts in the long run.
- 3. Always include images.
Images bolster your SEO campaign twofold. First and foremost, they allow you another opportunity to work those keywords in. Integrate a term or phrase into an image’s title, caption and alt text, and help boost your post (and site’s) overall SEO. On top of this great benefit, images also let you be seen in a totally separate area of search – the image search. This gives you an added channel through which customers can find – and visit – your site.
- 4. Make use of titles and headings.
Using titles and headings are a great way to break up text and make content more readable for a user. More importantly, they’re also hugely important in SEO. Search engines give great weight to content located within a title or header tag, and it’s factored significantly when determining search ranking. Take advantage of this fact by including your post’s keywords in your title, your headings and your subheadings when at all possible.
